After fifteen trips to the Red Sea coast for diving we realised it was time we saw more of Egypt than sea, boat, desert, airport and underwater. We extended our usual week at Roots Luxury Camp Al Quseir to ten days and asked Steve, of Pharaoh Dive Club to arrange something for us.
As a result after two morning dives on our fifth day we were picked up by a private mini bus and taken on the four hour drive through the desert to Luxor. We arrived at our hotel just after sunset to be greeted by Miriam of Kingfisher Tours. She gave us a comprehensive briefing on our packed schedule.
After checking in to our room we were met by our guide, Abdul, who saw us into a horse drawn caleche to Karnak temple for the Sound and Light show. This was a great introduction. We found a good restaurant for dinner very near to the hotel.
Next morning the view from our balcony promised well. Our guide picked us up and took we crossed the Nile for a very full day on the West Bank: Valley of the Kings, two temples, the alabaster factory and a pleasant lunch in an airy restaurant overlooking lush irrigated farmland.
Abdul was a mine of information and really brought everything to life. He had excellent English which was great as we always have hundreds of questions.
We returned to the hotel in time to freshen up before a sunset sail on the Nile in a Felucca with Miriam's husband Bakr which was perfect. We had dinner in another restaurant, the Jewel of the Nile, a wonderful menu of English and Egyptian favourites.
Up at 4.00 to cross the Nile by boat for a balloon ride at dawn. Five balloons went up, ours went higher, further and stayed up longer than any of the others! Magic.
After breakfast back at the hotel we were met by Abdul to tour Karnak and Luxor temples and then at lunch time it was back to Roots in our private transport.
All arranged by Kingfisher Tours, a brilliant trip and really good value. Thank you.
